IT/ITES and the Capability Paradox: The Industry That Builds AI Can't Always Use It

Technology and services firms are expected to lead on AI, yet many struggle with their own internal adoption. This is the capability paradox of the IT and ITES sector.

The industry often has deep technical talent but fragmented enterprise adoption. Delivery teams may know how to build AI for clients while internal functions continue to operate with outdated workflows, weak enablement, and little cross-functional AI fluency.

Part of the challenge is structural. In services businesses, billable work gets prioritized over internal transformation. Capability investment that improves the organization itself can be postponed because it competes with immediate revenue activity.

Closing the gap requires treating internal AI adoption as strategic infrastructure. The firms that do this well will not only deliver better internally. They will also become more credible externally because they can show clients what scaled AI usage looks like in their own operations.
